Persona 5 Tactica is a hack and slash game that is a “strategy RPG” (short for SRPG). The goal of the game is to combine the sleek, stunning graphics and gameplay mechanics of Persona 5 with the tactical techniques of the franchise’s strategy games like Wasteland or XCOM. When you think about the adventures of the past, the ghost thieves suddenly find themselves in the Metaverse, an alternate reality created by the collective consciousness of humanity.

However, the Metaverse looks completely different than it did during the Phantom Thieves’ last visit, and dark monsters appear to terrorize small creatures with hats for heads. The Phantom Thieves try to help the oppressed creatures with the hats, but our heroes find that their personal powers are not working properly and are almost defeated. They are then rescued by a mysterious revolutionary named Erina, who helps them escape. Erina explains that the Phantom Thieves are trapped in a magical world called a kingdom, ruled by tyrannical dictators. To escape this frightening world and return home, the Phantom Thieves agree to help Erin save the kingdom by defeating its oppressors. The story is mostly pretty mediocre as it feels like a simplified version of Persona 5 where the heroes defeat evil authorities. It lacks the depth of nuance of the original game as it tries to live the double life of a high school student/self-appointed guardian, as well as exciting side stories about making connections with acquaintances.

Another change concerns the use of title characters – entities that live in the hearts of your characters and help them fight their enemies. Unlike Persona 5, you can’t change the main character, but you can assign an additional person to each character, thus adding new skills and improving basic functions.

But the fusion mechanism, known to all fans of the series, remains. When you take on two people, you can combine them to create a third person – completely different – who inherits one of the “parent” skills. There’s no way to buy new weapons, but the mechanic here is very good, so most of your characters are probably holding the most powerful weapon available in half the kingdom.

Unfortunately, Persona 5 Tactica didn’t care about what happened between missions. As in the original, the characters talk a lot, discuss what is happening, have fun and generally spend a lot of time talking. Unfortunately, this time I want to cancel it. This is especially unfortunate considering how well Persona 5’s “root” did with these moments of relaxation, complemented by trips to palaces. They wanted to get to know their friends better and spend more time with them. This doesn’t happen.
